I will probably get some flack for this ... seeing as it is a canine. :P Ah well. That is what I enjoy drawing, so I will draw them, regardless.
A few months ago, back in August/September, I drew a simplistic Shiba Inu and joined and submitted it to PatchTogether. The design is here:
http://www.patchtogether.com/designs/shiba-1753.html
I decided to completely revamp the design, seeing as the anatomy is extremely wonky, and I have officially decided pudgy/fat Shiba Inu are much cuter.
So the Chunky ShiBa is born!
I might have to create a base ... or change around the design so that he will balance ( I personally prefer free-form standing figures instead of ones with bases ). So, I might end up modifying the design so all of his paws are on the ground. But, I wanted to make him a little more lively -- compared to just standing there. He is a little bit of a 'tough' Shiba but, in reality ... he is totally fat. And everyone would simply say how cute he is, instead of considering him a threat. ;)
@nommer: It would easily be able to stand on it's own as a freeform figure with 4 points holding him up. o__O Just because I made the dogs paws 'pointed' instead of regular paw shaped doesn't mean it would not stand.
I stepped away from this for a few good hours and returned to the drawing, and I think I agree a little ... but, it might be becauseof the shortened nose I gave it. Anyways, I went back into photoshop and modified the design slightly.
I agree with Shoomlah, I thought it was a Pomeranian.
I personally think the best stylizations are when you exaggerate key aspects of the breed, not random ones. For example, greyhounds are really skinny, basset hounds have droopy features, etc. etc. By exaggerating the breed's most memorable feature, you can make it even MORE recognizable.
But if you pick a random breed and a random characteristic to exaggerate, it just starts to look like a whole other dog.
I think if the feet are laid out well enough, it should be able to stand up on its own- the tripod is one of the more structurally sound shapes you can make, so long as it's well-balanced. :)
My problem with this isn't that it's a canine- I think everyone on PT is more that welcoming when it comes to good canine desings- it's just that I feel like the breed recognition is sort of lost with the chunkiness, something your previous dogs suffered from as well. Shiba Inus are made up of very distinctive shapes and, while it's possible to simplify that into a stumpy little character, yours ends up looking exactly like a pomeranian. If you can bring back the distinct stiff fur and round head that define a Shiba Inu, then I think you'll be on the right path.
@VISEone: This will probably be my last submission for a while, especially in this style. I do believe this piece has combined strengths from all my previous submissions and that makes all my other dog submissions pretty defunct. I will continue to support my Sukari design as well as this one. ;)
@Soot: If I move the raised leg down ( as I specified in my side comments up there ) then it will have four points supporting the weight of the figure. The materials the figurines are made out of are pretty tough, resin can chip but if this was made into resin I think that 4 points could easily support the chunkiness of the dog. :)
It's a nice and lovely character and like all your others - well drawn - but think about it - it's the forth charcater in this style you submitted. You really should concentrate on one (your favorite and best) character and promote this as good as you can. Otherwise I don't see a chance that you will catch enough interest for one of your characters to be ON DEMAND one day.
I tell this everyone - if you submit many similar designs you lower the chance of all of your designs.
D: nooooo I know shibas are short dogs and energetic.. but..but......THIS!! I'm calling PETA!! *sarcasm* That's one fat dog lol I'd buy him!
I would like this more if it was a plush, with the strong ink outline encorperated as part of the plush design, as in Joe Ledbetter style
:)
